Record-breaking Wayne Rooney relishing Liverpool test

Wayne Rooney shelves his recent personal milestone with England by focusing on Manchester United's visit of arch rivals Liverpool.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has put his newly-acquired England record to one side in order to concentrate on facing Liverpool on Saturday.

The domestic calendar resumes this weekend following the two-week international break, and the Red Devils host the old enemy at Old Trafford hoping to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat at Swansea City last time out.

However, Rooney, who became his nation's all-time leading goalscorer on Tuesday after reaching 50 England goals to overtake Sir Bobby Charlton, says that renewing hostilities with Liverpool is the ideal way to forget about their setback in South Wales.

"To achieve what I have, I would be lying if I said it didn't put a spring in my step and make you want to carry on scoring," he is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.

"I am very happy and grateful, but I go back to Manchester, get back into training and start focusing on Liverpool. Hopefully getting two goals in the last two games will mean I continue scoring.

"There's no better game to go into than Liverpool at home after losing our last game [at Swansea]. It is a game we have to win and it's something I'm looking forward to."

Louis van Gaal's United side sit fifth in the Premier League table.
