Jamie Redknapp: 'Manchester United need to start natural defenders'

Jamie Redknapp believes that Manchester United have to play with natural defenders in their back four to mount a successful challenge for the Premier League title.

Jamie Redknapp has said that Manchester United have to start natural defenders to win the Premier League title this season.

The Red Devils bounced back to form in the top flight as they defeated Everton 3-0 on Saturday, ending a poor run of results at Goodison Park.

Redknapp believes that the victory was down to Louis van Gaal's selection of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones at the heart of his defence, after playing Daley Blind and Ashley Young in his back four in their loss to Arsenal.

"Against Arsenal Louis van Gaal got it badly wrong," Redknapp said in Daily Mail. "Ashley Young and Daley Blind are not natural defenders. If they had played on Saturday, Romelu Lukaku would have eaten them up.

"But Van Gaal realised his mistake and went back to Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. They relished the battle. And with Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian, Van Gaal had a proper defensive unit.

"With the money they've spent and the players they have, United are more than capable of winning the league. And with the Manchester derby up next week, they have to build that challenge around a solid defence."

United are third in the Premier League after nine games this season.
