Marcos Rojo says that he is motivated to make the Manchester United left-back spot his own in the absence of Luke Shaw.

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo has said that he is determined to seize his second chance at the club after he was restored to Louis van Gaal's side.

Rojo joined United from Sporting Lisbon for around £16m in 2014 and played 26 times for the club in all competitions in his debut season in England.

He had played just twice for the Red Devils in the first two months of the current campaign but after speculation that he was not in Van Gaal's plans, the left-back has started the club's last six matches in place of the injured Luke Shaw.

The Argentine says that although he was more accustomed to playing at centre-back in the early years of his career, he will do everything it takes to make the spot on the left side of defence his own while Shaw continues his rehabilitation from a broken leg.

"I always used to play more as a centre-half," he told The Mirror. "When it was time to move over and play at full-back, I had to work at it, both for club and country. It is something that I continue to work on in training, so that I can keep on improving.

"Crossing the ball well, getting to the byline and helping to finish off a move are all key things that I need to do in my position. I am going to put in all the work necessary so that I can be on form to help out the team in that position.

"What happened to Luke is a real shame and a player never likes to get into the starting team as a result of an injury to a teammate, but that has been the case with me and now I have to get my head down and work hard in that role."

Rojo is expected to keep his place in Van Gaal's side when United host West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
