Rooney admits transfer request was “mistake”

Wayne Rooney looks back on his desire to leave Manchester United as ill advised.

Wayne Rooney has revealed that his recent performance has been fuelled by his attempts to put right his ‘mistaken’ desire to leave Old Trafford last year.

In October it was reported that Rooney was keen to move on from Manchester United, his reasons ranging from his treatment at the club to financial issues to scepticism over the club’s recruitment habits - specifically, Javier Hernandez, Chris Smalling and Bebe.

His eye was thought to be on Manchester City but shortly after making noises about leaving he secured a new five-year agreement with United.

“I made a mistake,” Rooney told The Guardian. “How wrong was I? I’m willing to admit that. I’ve apologised and ever since then I have wanted to try to prove myself again to the fans. I feel I am doing that now.”

The striker was integral in securing United’s first-leg semi-final win against Schalke earlier this week, putting them in clear sight of their third European cup final in four years.

“I’m delighted with my form at the minute and I’m grateful to the fans for supporting me through [my transfer demands],” he continued. “I hope I’ve repaid the fans now. I certainly feel vindicated [for staying]. It’s going to be a great end to the season if we can get to Wembley and win a Champions League final as well as the league.”

Manchester United’s next meeting will be with Arsenal at Emirates on Sunday.
