Wayne Rooney admits that it was 'heartbreaking' to miss out on the Premier League title to Man City, but insists that United will respond next season.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has admitted that it was "heartbreaking" to miss out on the Premier League title to Manchester City in the final minutes of the season.

The Red Devils thought they had done enough to retain their championship with a 1-0 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, with City's simultaneous match against Queens Park Rangers reading 2-1 to the Hoops as they entered stoppage time.

However, two goals in the dying moments from Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero earned the Citizens a dramatic 3-2 win and saw them claim their first title in 44 years.

"Yesterday was a difficult day for everyone. One minute you think we have won the title, then we haven't, which was heartbreaking," Rooney told MUTV.

The England striker has insisted that United will respond stronger and challenge their cross-city rivals on the trophy front next season.

He added: "That is how it goes sometimes. We have to believe in ourselves.

"We have to look forward to next season and hopefully we can win some trophies next season. I am sure we will be back. We all believe in ourselves."

Rooney ended the season with 35 goals in all competitions for United.
