Wayne Rooney 'turned down Manchester United return under Erik ten Hag'

Wayne Rooney, currently manager of Derby County, reportedly turns down the chance to join Erik ten Hag's backroom staff at Manchester United.

Wayne Rooney has reportedly rejected the opportunity to become part of Erik ten Hag's backroom staff at Manchester United.

On Thursday morning, the Premier League giants confirmed that they had agreed a three-year deal, with the option of a fourth year, with the Ajax boss to move to Old Trafford from 2022-23 onwards.

Members of Ten Hag's backroom staff will join him in making the switch to English football, but it has been well documented that the 52-year-old would like to bring in someone who has knowledge of the club.

However, according to The Athletic, that figure will not be Rooney, who is said to have given a negative reply when informal contact was recently made with him.

The report suggests that the United legend, who has been forging his own managerial career at Derby County, would only leave his current job for another senior job elsewhere.

United are also said to be in the process of appointing Steve McClaren, a former United assistant and someone who is known to Ten Hag from FC Twente. body check tags ::
