Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane slammed the Red Devils in the aftermath of their 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Pape Sarr made the breakthrough in the early stages of the second period before Lisandro Martinez turned into the back of his own net late on, with Man United suffering a two-goal loss in North London.

The 20-time English champions were fortunate to win their season opener against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday, with the visitors having the best of the action at Old Trafford.

Keane did not hold back in his assessment after the match and said that "Man United are the new Spurs".

"Desperate, absolutely desperate," the ex-Red Devils skipper told Sky Sports News after the match. "The biggest insult I always think about is teams who can't do it away from home, players who aren't up for it away from home.

"United go away today... weak, no leadership, gave bad goals away. It's easy to play against Man United. Man Utd are the new Spurs.

"The midfield looked lightweight. The six players high up the pitch, when you're out of possession they're giving you absolutely nothing. You can always carry one or two maybe in your team who don't give you much but can be match winners but United are carrying too many players when they're not really at it.

"I look at [Mason] Mount, [Bruno] Fernandes out of possession, they look like schoolboys. They haven't got that physicality to get the ball back.

"We're told Ten Hag is a brilliant coach, well we need to see it. They looked flat tonight. I'd like to know what they're doing on the training pitch. Are they over training? They don't look full of energy."

Keane also criticised Marcus Rashford for his role in the defeat, with the England international again failing to make his mark operating through the middle.

"Rashford playing up through the middle again the usual stuff. He's like a child out there playing up through the middle?" the 52-year-old added.

"His first few touches when he gets it suggest he doesn't want to play up through the middle but you have to you got to do a job for the team tonight."

Man United will be bidding to bounce back when they welcome Nottingham Forest to Old Trafford next Saturday before heading to title hopefuls Arsenal on September 3.

The Red Devils are still believed to be planning to improve their squad before the transfer deadline, with a defensive midfielder thought to be high on Ten Hag's list of priorities, although the amount that can be spent will largely hinge on outgoings. body check tags ::
