Paul Scholes slams "average" Manchester United following Champions League exit

Paul Scholes says that Manchester United are an "average team" after their Champions League campaign came to an end at the group stage.

Paul Scholes has described Manchester United as an "average team" following Tuesday night's Champions League exit.

Louis van Gaal's side failed to make it through to the last 16 of the competition as they were beaten 3-2 by Wolfsburg in Germany.

Scholes, who spent 20 years playing for the Red Devils, also criticised Van Gaal's failure to sign a proven striker after spending around £36m on youngster Anthony Martial in the summer.

"United just look an average team," Scholes said on BT Sport. "With an average team you get average performances.

"When you're relying on a 20-year-old kid to scoring a goal, it's just not right. There should be proven goalscorers there. As we seen at the start of the season, proven goalscorers have left the club - that's where they've failed, there's no real killer instinct.

"I'm sure Martial will be a brilliant player, the only thing he lacks is that killer instinct. I'm sure that will come over years to come but United should not be relying on a 20-year-old kid, especially when you've spent £250m."

United remain in contention for the Premier League title as they are fourth in the table, three points adrift of leaders Leicester City.
