Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has insisted that his father Sir Alex made the "sensible" decision to retire.
The 71-year-old announced his intention to step down from the helm of Old Trafford this week following a 26-year career at the club.
While the Peterborough boss has admitted that he knew prior to his father's announcement, the 41-year-old has insisted that it was still a shock.
"I've known about it for a bit," BBC Sport quotes Ferguson as saying. "Obviously when it comes out in public it hits you. He's made the right decision in my and the family's eyes.
"We spoke about it and he was adamant and we all realised the reasons he gave were very sensible ones. He's making sure he has a lot of other activities to do, which is important when you retire."
Sir Alex will remain within the club as a director and ambassador.
