Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag has insisted that his team have always remained "calm" despite suggestions of a "crisis" in the early months of the 2023-24 campaign.

The Red Devils have already suffered 10 defeats in all competitions this season, including three in the Champions League, which has left them on the brink of elimination from the competition.

Man United have also been knocked out of the EFL Cup, while they have lost six times in England's top flight this term, but nine wins have allowed them to collect 27 points, which is enough for sixth position in the table, only three points behind fourth-placed Manchester City.

There had been suggestions that Ten Hag could lose his job if the team failed to perform in their three home games against Chelsea, Bournemouth and Bayern Munich, but the Red Devils managed to record a 2-1 victory over Chelsea on Wednesday to ease the pressure on the head coach.

"What's the crisis?" Ten Hag told reporters after the Chelsea match when questioned on what has been a peculiar opening few months of the season for the club.

"Not for us. We are in a journey and we keep calm. We look into the process, where we know where we have to build, we know where we have to build on.

"So yeah, as I said, we are going in the right direction. We don't get distracted from criticism around us, but we are ourselves. We are very critical on ourselves.

"We know we are not quick [to be] satisfied and happy and we always want to do better. And if we do things not good, we want to put things right and we want to keep going in this process.

"And we want to keep going in this progress, because we know the season is long. We have to improve a lot if you want to be successful. But this team is capable to be successful."

When asked about the key to finding a consistent run of form, Ten Hag added: "Always make sure you are team. You are co-operating. So when you [have] good co-operation, that's about communication.

"And you have a good organisation, in and out of possession. And then you are going to play well because we have brilliant players who can make the difference.

"I'm very pleased with the number of chances we created. And I think it was very enjoyable for all of us, for our fans as well, to watch us play and this is what we want.

"Every game, I know [it] is not possible because we are not robots. But if you play less good or you play poor, you still have to win."

Man United have now been victorious in six of their last eight league matches, with the team very much in contention for the top four at this stage despite their issues in the opening months of the campaign. body check tags ::
