Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal reacted angrily to questions about David de Gea's future during his press conference on Friday.

The Spanish goalkeeper came close to joining Real Madrid last summer, but the deal fell through when the relevant paperwork was not completed by the deadline.

De Gea performed a dramatic U-turn and ended up signing a new four-year deal at Old Trafford, but rumours persist about his long-term future.

When the question was raised in Van Gaal's press conference, the Dutchman said: "You have said that he is going to Real Madrid. I have said always that he stays. You remember that?

"And now you are asking how long he has to stay? Come on. First you have to say, 'Okay, sorry that I have written that. Sorry.' Ask him, ask him. Maybe he said something about that, but not to me."

Van Gaal is also confident that there will not be an exodus of players at the end of the season if the club fail to qualify for the Champions League.

The Red Devils are currently fifth in the Premier League table, four points behind fourth-placed Manchester City with six games left to play.

Even if United finish fourth, they could still miss out on the elite competition next season if City and Liverpool both finish outside the top four but win the Champions League and Europa League respectively.

When asked about potential player departures, Van Gaal said: "There is not any player who wants to go away, I think.

"And when another club wants to pay the figures that the board of Manchester United demand, then it is possible, but that is dependent on the board, of the decision of the board if a player can go.

"I don't think [players would leave for Champions League football], I don't think so. But, of course, you have to ask the players, but the players are the participants of every week's match."

United still have an opportunity to end the campaign with silverware as they are in the FA Cup semi-finals following their victory over West Ham United on Wednesday.
