Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal admits that he had a choice of five clubs including the Red Devils after deciding to leave his role with the Netherlands.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has revealed that he had a choice of joining four other clubs before deciding to take up the challenge of managing the Red Devils.

The 63-year-old was in demand after announcing that he would leave his role with the Netherlands after the World Cup, but picked United in spite of the fact that the club would not be competing in the Champions League this season.

Van Gaal told reporters: "I had choices. I could have chosen four other clubs, but this was the challenge for me and why I am here.

"I know of course it is a big challenge, not so easy, but I accept that. So I don't expect anything. It is at the end of the season that it counts where you are. Now doesn't count.

"Yes, we are going the right way - despite the injuries we've had. But I think the most important thing is that the players want to follow the philosophy I have, which is why we have been able to continue despite the many changes we have made."

Van Gaal had been heavily linked with Tottenham Hotspur and apparently met chairman Daniel Levy to discuss the possibility of taking over at White Hart Lane.
