Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that defender Luke Shaw is working hard to improve his fitness ahead of the new season.
Van Gaal has been critical of the 19-year-old's fitness in recent days, but after Shaw played 45 minutes against Inter Milan on Tuesday evening, his manager admitted that he was impressed with Shaw's improvement against the Italian outfit.
The former Netherlands coach is quoted by BT Sport as saying: "I think that he did very good tonight. He's working very hard. He was lucky today because I was going to play our friend Reece James but he was a little bit injured.
"And so I asked Shaw, in spite of a very heavy training session this morning, to play."
Shaw moved to Old Trafford in a £30m transfer from Southampton after returning from the World Cup finals in Brazil.
