Louis van Gaal: 'Wayne Rooney will end Premier League goal drought'

Manchester United's Louis van Gaal believes that Wayne Rooney will end his goal drought in the Premier League soon enough to close in on the club's all-time goalscoring record.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has backed Wayne Rooney to end his goal drought in the Premier League.

The 29-year-old has failed to find the net in the top flight so far in the campaign, taking his scoreless streak to 10 matches going back to last season.

However, the Dutchman believes that Rooney is more than capable of breaking his duck to move closer to surpassing the club's all-time goalscoring record of 249 strikes set by Sir Bobby Charlton.

Van Gaal told reporters: "He scored against Bruges. It doesn't matter if it's the Premier League or the Champions League. I was very happy when we scored more goals, and it doesn't matter to me who is scoring.

"But we have to score more. When you are so dominant as we are, in all the matches, we have to win these games. Wayne has a range of scoring goals, like Juan Mata, Memphis [Depay], Anthony Martial and Marouane Fellaini. You can count all the goals he's made.

"To my memory, Rooney has scored a lot. He's nearly the record holder in the club, so I hope he will beat that record, but I have to wait and see, like you do."

Rooney broke Charlton's all-time England goalscoring record when he notched his 50th strike in the Three Lions' win over Switzerland last week.
