Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has claimed that the fans should not expect Memphis Depay to play at a consistently high level due to his age.
The 21-year-old has failed to cement a regular first-team spot at Old Trafford following his summer arrival from PSV Eindhoven.
As a result of his form, the winger has been left out of Danny Blind's latest Netherlands squad.
"I have said he is the greatest talent of his age but he is only 21 and you cannot expect consistency," Van Gaal said in today's press conference. "He is at a stage of his career where he must adapt to many things.
"I'm convinced he's coming back maybe stronger than before but we have to give him time, like we will with [Anthony] Martial when he is a little bit lower in his shape."
Depay is not available to play in tomorrow's Champions League match against CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford.
