Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen believes that his rivals' "crazy" spending this summer will only make it sweeter to beat them.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has claimed that the "crazy" level of spending from their Premier League rivals will only make it sweeter when they beat them next season.

The likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea have all spent big in an effort to improve their squads this summer, whereas Spurs are the only Premier League team yet to make a single signing.

However, rather than being left behind by their rivals, Vertonghen believes that the teams around them in the table will be under more pressure to succeed next season as a result of their spending.

Asked whether he expected the most competitive Premier League title race yet, Vertonghen told The Telegraph: "Yeah, definitely. With their spending, a lot of pressure comes on teams. You've seen how much money has been spent in the window and there's a month still to go, it's crazy.

"With spending, there's a lot of pressure on the teams. There are four, five teams maybe who have to become champions now and that will put great pressure on them and that makes the Premier League the best in the world to watch. It's a great thing to play in. I'm happy everyone has strengthened their teams because that makes it so much better when you beat them.

"We have got a lot of pressure on our team as well. We want to do better than second. We had a great season and now we have to make sure we beat those top teams away from home like we did at the Lane. We have a great team, a young team, we have improved a lot. This looks like a pre-season where we finally have everyone together, or almost everyone, and can work on things the manager wants and I think we've seen lots of improvements already."

Spurs will begin the 2017-18 season away to newly-promoted Newcastle United on August 13.
