Ashley Young: 'Fan could have taken Rio Ferdinand's eye out'

Manchester United winger Ashley Young says that it's "not nice" to witness players getting attacked by fans after Rio Ferdinand was hit by an object thrown from the crowd during the Manchester derby.

Manchester United winger Ashley Young is hopeful that the Football Association will deal with the unsavoury scenes that followed the Red Devils' win over Manchester City.

The red half of Manchester celebrated after clinching a late 3-2 win over their fierce rivals yesterday but it was dominated by an incident involving defender Rio Ferdinand, who was hit above the eye with an object thrown from the crowd.

A City fan also made his way onto the pitch shortly after the incident but was restrained by goalkeeper Joe Hart.

"If the pitch hadn't been so wet when the fan came on and he slipped over, he could have attacked Rio," Young told MUTV.

"When Wazza (Wayne Rooney) was trying to take his corner there were so many objects being thrown on to the pitch, and the one that hit Rio could have taken his eye out. It is not nice to see that. Hopefully that will be dealt with."

The FA announced yesterday that they are investigating the incident.
