Morgan Schneiderlin scored six minutes into his Manchester United career as he helped the Red Devils to a hard-fought pre-season win over Club America in Seattle.
The French international gave the Premier League giants an early breakthrough at CenturyLink Field when he rose highest to meet Juan Mata's floated cross before heading into the back of the net.
Club America could have been back on level terms within moments as first Carlos Quintero failed to score from close range before Michael Arroyo missed the chance to tuck away the rebound.
Mata then squandered another early opportunity to double United's lead as his low shot was saved by Gonzalez.
Arroyo thought he had earned a penalty on 33 minutes for an alleged clip by Daley Blind, but the referee waved away his appeals.
Memphis Depay tried to put the Red Devils further clear before the interval with a shot which drifted wide before he played in Wayne Rooney moments later, only for the England international to drag his effort off-target.
United continued to create chances, with Andreas Pereira and Adnan Januzaj missing opportunities to score a second.
However, they nearly conceded an equaliser late on when Jefferson Montero's close-range strike came back off the post, but United held on to get their pre-season off to a winning start.
