Goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen help Tottenham Hotspur defeat Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Tottenham Hotspur have beaten Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen.

Danny Welbeck pulled one back for David Moyes's side, but the North London side were able to hang on for a second consecutive victory at the home of the Premier League champions.

David de Gea had kept out Aaron Lennon before Adebayor climbed above his marker to head Eriksen's cross past the Spanish goalkeeper in the 34th minute.

Roberto Soldado could have added a second before half time when Lennon centred from the right, but the Spaniard flicked wide at full stretch.

Danny Welbeck felt that he should have been awarded a penalty after the break when upended by Vlad Chiriches but Howard Webb waved away the protests.

Spurs went 2-0 ahead when another cross from Lennon was headed in by Eriksen in the 65th minute, but the home side restored hope two minutes later when Welbeck latched on to Adnan Januzaj's through ball and lifted over the advancing Hugo Lloris.

A chance fell for Welbeck to shoot inside the area after Javier Hernandez failed to connect with Januzaj's cross, but the England international slipped as he tried to hit the ball on the turn.

The Old Trafford faithful were up in arms when Webb denied Ashley Young a penalty when he jumped over a challenge from Lloris after getting to a loose ball first.

United threw everything at Spurs and nearly got their reward in stoppage time, but Danny Rose was on hand to hack Nemanja Vidic's header off the line.
