Manchester United and Everton play out a goalless draw in Wayne Rooney's testimonial match.

Everton have held Manchester United to a goalless draw at Old Trafford in front of more than 58,000 supporters in Wayne Rooney's testimonial match.

Rooney, who started his professional career at Everton, left the field early in the second period to a standing ovation from both sets of supporters.

The Red Devils dominated the early possession but had to wait until the 25th minute for their first clear-cut chance, which went begging when Maarten Stekelenburg denied Zlatan Ibrahimovic from a tight angle.

United continued to dictate play, but Everton almost caught them off guard in the 32nd minute when Romelu Lukaku squared the ball to Ross Barkley in the box and the England international tested David de Gea with a stinging strike that the United keeper could only parry.

Ibrahimovic looked dangerous all evening and another chance fell his way in the 43rd minute when John Stones misjudged a long ball, allowing the Swede clean through on goal, but Stekelenburg was on hand to smother.

Chances proved even harder to come by in the second period, but both Mourinho and Ronald Koeman got to know their respective sides better by taking full advantage of the option to use all of their substitutes.

This included a debut for United's summer capture Henrikh Mkhitaryan, although he and his teammates struggled to break down a stubborn and organised Everton defence.

Rooney, who was celebrating 12 successful seasons with United, left the park in the 53rd minute to make way for England teammate Marcus Rashford.

A deflected strike from Juan Mata with less than 15 minutes to go that went wide was as close as United came in the second half of a game that was all about one man.
