Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has reportedly backed the club's bid to bring Lille midfielder Angel Gomes back to Old Trafford.
Gomes graduated from Man United's academy system but ultimately failed to force his way into the club's first-team setup.
The 24-year-old was restricted to just 10 first-team appearances, before he left upon the expiry of his contract to sign for Lille in the summer of 2020.
Gomes spent time on loan at Boavista in Portugal, before he returned to France to establish himself as a key figure in the Lille squad.
The midfielder, who has earned four caps for England, has seen his impressive performances lead to rumours of a potential move away from the French club in 2025.
Amorim backs Man United's Gomes bid
Man United are among the clubs who are interested in signing Gomes, who is out of contract with Lille at the end of the season.
Last month, Gomes admitted that it would be "difficult to say no" if he was offered the chance to return to Man United.
The Red Devils have changed manager since initially being linked with Gomes, raising the possibility that the new boss may not be as keen to sign the Lille star.
However, according to The Sun, Amorim is backing Man United to pursue a deal to sign their former academy player, who is regarded as a 'major target'.
The report claims that Amorim is 'right behind the possible move', with Gomes able to speak to clubs in January about signing a pre-contract agreement.
Is Gomes set to replace Casemiro?
Man United sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox appear to be the driving force behind Man United's bid to sign Gomes.
The Red Devils are seemingly keen to sign a deep-lying midfielder, with uncertainty surrounding the future of Casemiro.
A recent report claimed that Amorim is prepared to make the Brazilian available for transfer in the January transfer window.
While Man United remain keen to sign Gomes, they have also been linked with a potential move to recruit Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Martin Baturina. body check tags ::
