Manchester United have reportedly been offered the opportunity to sign Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell before this summer's transfer window closes for business.
The left-back is not in the plans of new Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca, so he is set to leave Stamford Bridge over the next week, with a number of clubs said to be monitoring the situation.
According to talkSPORT, Man United have been offered the chance to sign the Englishman, who has made 106 appearances for the Blues since his arrival from Leicester City in August 2020.
Marc Cucurella will be Chelsea's number one left-back this season, with Maresca recently confirming that Chilwell has been informed he is surplus to requirements.
"We have a big squad and it's impossible to give all of them minutes. If they are looking for minutes it's better for them to leave... with Chilly, he's lovely guy, but I said he is going to struggle with his position. It's not brutal, it's just honest," said the London club's new head coach.
Man United 'offered chance' to sign Chelsea defender Chilwell
Chilwell has another three years left on a lucrative contract at Chelsea, but he is currently training away from the first team and risks his career stalling if he does not leave over the next week.
The defender had his fitness problems during the 2023-24 campaign, only making 13 Premier League appearances, and he has not managed to play more than 30 matches in a season over the last three years.
Man United currently have issues at left-back, with Luke Shaw out with a calf problem, while Tyrell Malacia missed the entirety of the 2023-24 campaign due to a serious knee injury.
There are no guarantees over Malacia's fitness, while Shaw's ongoing muscular issues are concerning for Man United, with the Englishman again struggling to stay clear of injury last term.
Should Man United move for Chilwell?
Diogo Dalot is expected to continue at left-back while Shaw is on the sidelines, with new signing Noussair Mazraoui set to play on the right, which was the case against Fulham last Friday.
However, it is understood that Man United are open to signing a new left-back before the transfer window closes, and their attention could switch to that area once a move for Paris Saint-Germain's Manuel Ugarte has been secured.
The Red Devils are now believed to be closing in on the signature of Ugarte, with the midfielder expected to arrive on loan with an obligation to buy next summer.
Chilwell will be available for a cut-price fee, and in full flow, he can be one of the best left-backs in the Premier League, so it is certainly an interesting option for Man United.
The defender has won the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup during his time at Stamford Bridge, while he has a strong record of 12 goals and 18 assists in 169 Premier League appearances. body check tags ::
