La Liga outfit Getafe are reportedly hoping to sign English attacker Mason Greenwood on a permanent basis from Manchester United.
The 22-year-old is attempting to rebuild his career in Spain after a year and a half away from the game, having been arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape and assault following online allegations from a woman.
Greenwood was then further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill before being released on bail, and he was immediately suspended by Man United once the accusations emerged.
After being arrested again for breaching his bail conditions, Greenwood was charged with one count of attempted rape, one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one count of engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and he was due to go on trial in November 2023.
However, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges against Greenwood earlier this year, citing the "withdrawal of key witnesses" and "new evidence" coming to light, which meant that there was no longer a realistic chance of conviction.
Once Man United had completed their own internal review, the Red Devils were reportedly preparing to re-integrate Greenwood into the squad - plans which were met with enormous backlash.
As a result, the club performed a U-turn on their decision and informed the former England international that he would not be resuming his career at Old Trafford, but they decided against terminating his contract.
Instead, Greenwood - whose deal at the Theatre of Dreams runs until 2025 - was loaned out to Getafe, where he has made an impressive start with three goals and three assists from his first 10 games.
The forward has started each of Getafe's last five La Liga games and provided the assist for Borja Mayoral's second-minute opener in Saturday's draw with Granada, and according to The Sun, the Spanish side want to retain his services beyond the end of the season.
While Greenwood supposedly has no future at Man United, Red Devils chiefs would rather extend the 22-year-old's loan in La Liga, although Getafe will try to twist their arm with an attractive offer.
"Getafe have discussed trying to get United round the table so they can make an offer, which they believe could be attractive to United to get Mason off their wage bill," a source told the publication.
"The likelier option is United agree for the loan to be extended as they know that Mason is happy and rebuilding his life. They know he needs to grow up and want him to do so — and so far the Getafe loan has worked out well for everyone."
Prior to his arrest and suspension, Greenwood rose up the Man United youth ranks to make 129 senior appearances for the club, scoring 35 goals and providing another 12 assists in the process.
Amid the Englishman's fast start to life in Spain, Man United's current wingers have flattered to deceive this term, with Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Mason Mount and Facundo Pellistri boasting just two goals between them in all tournaments.
Nevertheless, Erik ten Hag's side made it back-to-back league wins with a 1-0 beating of Luton Town on Saturday, rising to sixth in the table heading into the November international break.
