Harry Maguire reportedly turned down a £278,000-a-week contract offer from Manchester City in order to join Manchester United in this summer's transfer window.
United completed a move for the England international in the latter stages of the English window, with the Red Devils believed to have paid in the region of £80m to sign the 26-year-old.
However, according to the Daily Star, Maguire could have joined the Premier League champions, who offered the centre-back a £278,000-a-week contract which would have earned him almost £70m.
The report claims that the Englishman 'held extensive talks' with City chiefs over a potential switch to the Etihad Stadium.
However, Maguire was only ever interested in a move to Old Trafford, despite the fact that he is earning almost £100,000 a week less than he would have collected at City.
The former Sheffield United youngster impressed on his debut for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side against Chelsea, where the 20-time English champions opened their campaign with a 4-0 home success.
