Manchester United may reportedly consider moving for Atletico Madrid forward Alvaro Morata during the January transfer window.

Either side of the World Cup break and during the tournament in Qatar, Marcus Rashford has rediscovered his best form, emerging as an option to down the middle of the attack as well as on the flank.

However, repeated injury issues for Anthony Martial and the well-documented departure of Cristiano Ronaldo leaves United in a position where they could become short of centre-forward options.

For a number of months, it has been claimed that Erik ten Hag had been keen on signing PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo at the midway point of the campaign.

The Netherlands international himself has indicated in the past that he would be interested in a switch to Old Trafford, but he instead completed a shock move to Liverpool on Wednesday night.

According to ESPN, Ten Hag has been left frustrated that United have missed out on a player that he viewed as ideal for his forward line at Old Trafford.

The same report claims that Atletico striker Morata may now become a target for United as they consider potential loan deals.

Morata has made as many as 16 starts and three substitute appearances in La Liga and the Champions League this campaign, scoring five goals.

Given the departure of Matheus Cunha and constant speculation regarding the future of Joao Felix, it was perceived that Morata would remain at Wanda Metropolitano.

However, the Spain international may become an option if Atletico are willing to listen to loan offers, with much potentially depending on whether a resolution is found with Felix.

Although the Portuguese star is said to have numerous admirers in the Premier League, Atletico are allegedly insisting on a straight loan deal for the 23-year-old.

The report adds that any club who wishes to push through a deal for Felix would be expected to pay in the region of €22m (£19.43m) for the second half of the season.

With a restricted transfer budget, that is a proposition which appears likely to leave United considering other options at this stage.

Atletico are in the process of making changes to their squad due to their early elimination from the Champions League and failure to earn a spot in the Europa League. body check tags ::
