Manchester United reportedly remain interested in eventually signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong.
During a season where United have generally impressed in the Premier League, there has been constant debate over their right-back position.
Diogo Dalot was the established first choice before the World Cup, his performances earning him game time with Portugal in the tournament in Qatar.
As a result, it was perceived that Aaron Wan-Bissaka was a near certainty to depart Old Trafford having been provided with just one substitute outing in the Premier League.
However, an injury to Dalot has given his understudy to make an impact under Erik ten Hag, an opportunity which he has taken with both hands.
When both players are fit, it is now unclear who will get the nod in the first XI, arguably an indication that Wan-Bissaka may now remain at the Theatre of Dreams in the long term.
Nevertheless, according to Bild, United are still admirers of Frimpong and may be prepared to make a formal approach.
The 22-year-old is no stranger to Manchester having spent time in Manchester City's academy setup between 2010 and 2019 without going on to make an appearance for the senior team.
Instead, Frimpong has made his name at Celtic and Bayer Leverkusen, initially starring for the Scottish giants before making the switch to the Bundesliga.
In terms of numbers, the Netherlands Under-21s international is currently enjoying the best campaign of his career, contributing five goals and two assists from 19 outings in Germany's top flight.
Frimpong earned a spot in Netherlands' squad for the World Cup without being provided with his Oranje debut before his nation's quarter-final exit.
While Leverkusen would prefer to keep Frimpong in the long term, he has less than two-and-a-half years left on his contract, while his club are far from certain to secure European football for 2023-24.
Leverkusen are said to have paid Celtic a fee in the region of €11m when they signed Frimpong in January 2021, but United would be expected to pay well over double that price should they make their move later in 2023. body check tags ::
