Man United transfer news: Club 'looking at Premier League alternative' over Alphonso Davies

Manchester United are reportedly looking at alternatives to Alphonso Davies after learning the Bayern Munich left-back's wage demands.

Manchester United have reportedly started to consider other options in the transfer market at left-back, due to the predicted wage demands of Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies.

The Canadian is set to leave the Allianz Arena on a free transfer next summer, with Real Madrid and Barcelona among the clubs to have been linked with the offensive left-back.

Davies has overcome injury problems to be a regular for club and country again this season, missing just one game so far, contributing to three goals.

In his seventh season in Bavaria, it appears as though this will be the 23-year-old's last, as no new contract has been agreed yet, ahead of the January window where Davies will be free to speak to other clubs.

Man United seeking left-back alternatives

Yet another injury setback for Luke Shaw has evidently accelerated Man United's search for a new left-back, with no natural players in the squad currently available.

Tyrell Malacia is also currently sidelined long term, so Diogo Dalot and Lisandro Martinez have been shifted out the to left to cover on multiple occasions.

In order to rectify that issue, the Red Devils are believed to be looking at the transfer market to bring in a reliable option on the left-hand side of defence.

CaughtOffside claim that Davies's potential wage demandes will put Man United off pursuing a deal for the full-back though, and they may turn to Chelsea outcast Ben Chilwell instead.

The report states Davies will be hoping for a salary in the region of €12m-per-year (£10m), so United could look elsewhere, given their track record of handing out large contracts in the past.

Would Chilwell be a good fit at Man United?

Man United's problem at left-back stems solely from only having two natural players in that position who are both extremely injury prone.

Shaw's issues are well documented, and Malacia has been absent for the best part of two years, so signing Chilwell could be perceived as something of a risk by many observers.

Chilwell is currently not in Enzo Maresca's plans despite being fit, with Marc Cucurella, Renato Veiga and Levi Colwill above him in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

However, Chilwell's injury record is just as bleak as Shaw's, having missed almost the entirety of the last three seasons with recurring knee and hamstring issues.

An England international on his day, like Shaw, Chilwell has shown quality in the past, with 21 caps to his name, and a £50m price tag which saw him move to Chelsea, but there is no disputing that while it will be the cheaper option, it does carry risk.
