Manchester United's new sporting director Dan Ashworth has reportedly made the extension of England international Kobbie Mainoo's contract a priority this summer.
After months of discussions with Newcastle United, Ashworth officially began his role as sporting director of the Red Devils last week, and the Englishman has wasted no time getting to work.
The 53-year-old, along with short-term technical director Christopher Vivell, are believed to be closing in on bringing two new players to Old Trafford: Matthijs De Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee.
Recent reports suggest Zirkzee is on the verge of joining Erik ten Hag's side on a five-year contract, while Fabrizio Romano revealed that talks with De Ligt were progressing well earlier this week.
However, Ashworth's responsibilities will extend beyond new signings to include securing contract renewals as well.
Mainoo contract extension top of priority list for Ashworth
According to HITC, with progress being made around new arrivals, tying Mainoo down to a new and improved deal has now risen to the top of the priority list for the United sporting director.
Mainoo's current deal at Old Trafford runs until 2027, but United are looking to offer him a significantly enhanced deal that more accurately reflects his increasing impact on the team.
The report adds that the Red Devils had opened talks with the teenage sensation about new terms but the player's camp had paused the discussions until after the season ended to allow him to focus on his form.
The 18-year-old England international had a breakthrough season in 2023-24, scoring crucial goals against the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Liverpool and Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
His impressive performances for United earned him his first England cap earlier this year as well as a call-up to Gareth Southgate's squad for the European Championship.
Mainoo has been in excellent form for the Three Lions at Euro 2024 and was one of England's standout players in their victory over the Netherlands, which saw the side secure their place in the final against Spain on Sunday.
Despite his tender age, Mainoo has already become one of Manchester United's most important players and seems to have nailed down his spot in England's strongest starting 11 as well.
Man United confident of Mainoo contract extension after Ten Hag decision
It is understood that Mainoo wanted clarity on the future of Ten Hag, whom he holds in high regard, before confirming a new deal with the club.
Renewing the Dutchman's contract was one of Ashworth's first major tasks since becoming the club's new sporting director.
With Ten Hag now confirmed to be staying on, Ashworth is believed to be hopeful that discussions regarding Mainoo's new contract can gain momentum once the midfielder returns from international duty.
The 18-year-old currently earns £20,000 a week at United, and reports suggest his new deal will see his salary increase to around £60,000 a week.
Mainoo made 24 appearances in the Premier League for the Red Devils last season, during which he scored three goals and provided an assist.
