Manchester United forward Anthony Martial to be offered Ligue 1 return?

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is reportedly in line to be offered a chance to return to Ligue 1 during the summer.

At least two clubs in Ligue 1 are allegedly contemplating whether to move for Manchester United forward Anthony Martial.

With just over four-and-a-months remaining on his contract, Martial is in line to exit the Red Devils on a free transfer in the summer.

While United possess the option to extend his terms for a further 12 months, that appears highly unlikely with the player having failed to impress under Erik ten Hag.

Although the £57.6m signing has contributed 90 goals and 55 assists from his 317 appearances in all competitions, he has netted just 12 times for United since the start of 2021-22.

During the current campaign, the 28-year-old has scored just twice in seven starts and 12 substitute outings in all competitions, and he is currently sidelined after a groin operation.

Despite not being in a position where he can impress potential suitors, Martial's soon-to-be free agent status will inevitably lead to widespread interest.

As it stands, no particular club look to be leading the race for his signature, yet proposals may begin to arrive once he comes back into contention later in the season.

According to The Sun, Monaco and Marseille are each monitoring the situation as they sense an opportunity to make a noteworthy acquisition.

Martial is no stranger to the former having made 70 appearances between 2013 and 2015, contributing 15 goals and eight assists to earn him what was then a high-profile move to Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Marseille are also said to be interested at a time when they look far from certain to qualify for European football next season.

Gennaro Gattuso's side are currently on a five-game winless streak in Ligue 1 and sit in eighth position in the standings, five points adrift of fifth and eight behind Monaco who are in third position.

The report adds that the likes of Fenerbahce and clubs in Saudi Arabia may have moved for Martial in January had he not been ruled out for at least two months.

As it stands, United currently hope that Martial will be in a position to return after the March international break. body check tags ::
