Manchester United have reportedly failed with an attempt to add a Premier League defender to their squad.

Head coach Erik ten Hag has admitted that the Red Devils are in the market for a new centre-back ahead of 2024-25.

However, as it stands, it is yet to be determined whether the Dutchman will remain at the helm as he undergoes an end-of-season review.

As a result of a new footballing operations team being put together, United do not necessarily have to wait for a manager's approval to add to their ranks.

That is particularly the case when a player is available on a free transfer, United known to be in a position where they could benefit from acquiring quality free agents.

Nevertheless, it appears that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co were too slow with their efforts to edge out their competition for a former Manchester City youngster.

Man United miss out on Adarabioyo

According to the Daily Mail, United have failed with a late attempt to win the race for Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo.

Over the weekend, it was heavily reported that Chelsea had all but secured the signature for the player, aside from him undergoing a medical.

That is now said to have taken place with only an official announcement left to come from the West Londoners, yet it is alleged that Man United tried to tempt the 26-year-old back to Manchester.

United are said to have made a formal approach at the weekend, only for Adarabioyo to have already been convinced to make the switch to the Blues.

Furthermore, it is said that Adarabioyo's brief time having worked under Enzo Maresca at City contributed to his mind having already been made up.

What now for United?

Much will depend on United's strategy when it comes to certain areas of the pitch, but they have been linked with numerous defenders who will cost in excess of £40m.

Earlier in the week, it was suggested that Sporting Lisbon's Goncalo Inacio had emerged as a priority target, the Portugal international possessing a £51m release clause.

Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite is another who could be targeted in due course, yet United must raise sufficient funds to loosen the purse strings in several areas.

Negotiations remain ongoing with Jonny Evans, but the Northern Ireland international will only be a backup option behind the likes of Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez if he chooses to stay at Old Trafford. body check tags ::
