Manchester United 'in talks with Tom Huddlestone'

Manchester United are reportedly looking to sign veteran midfielder Tom Huddlestone over the coming weeks.

Recently-appointed head coach Erik ten Hag is currently in the process of finalising his first-team squad ahead of the end of the summer transfer window.

As it stands, Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen have all made the switch to Old Trafford, with more players expected to follow in due course.

However, it appears that Ten Hag is giving serious consideration to making a notable addition in the form of Huddlestone, who spent 2021-22 at Hull City.

According to The Telegraph, there is interest in bringing in the 35-year-old in a player-coach position, like Paul McShane has previously occupied at the club.

Like has become an increasingly common occurrence at Premier League clubs, McShane was signed to feature in Premier League 2 while also playing a part on the training pitch.

The defender, a former United youngster, has now left that role, freeing up space for Huddlestone to take over if a deal can be agreed with the Red Devils.

The 35-year-old has become less active on the pitch in recent seasons, only making four starts and seven substitute appearances in the Championship for Hull during the last campaign.

That was partly down to injuries and that has seemingly led to the former England midfielder looking to enhance his prospects after the end of his playing days.

Should Huddlestone agree terms with United, it would represent the first step that he has made with regards to becoming a full-time coach in the future.

He has endured a long senior career having been handed his professional debut as young as 16, making 45 senior appearances for Derby County during 2003-04 when he only turned 17 years of age midway through that season.
