Manchester United have reportedly identified Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Nelson Semedo as a potential transfer target.

The Red Devils have endured a mixed summer window thus far, even though they have added Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund to their ranks.

Head coach Erik ten Hag has been left frustrated that he has been unable to add a new centre-back and central midfielder to his squad, a consequence of the necessary sales not materialising.

As the transfer window draws closer to a conclusion, the likelihood is that United may be able to offload a number of squad members in the hope of signing at least one fresh face.

Earlier in the summer, it had appeared that a right-back would also be on Ten Hag's agenda, even though Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot are currently competing for a spot in the team.

While Wan-Bissaka is better equipped from a defensive aspect, Dalot's strengths come from his attacking capabilities, theoretically providing Ten Hag with alternatives for different types of fixtures.

Nevertheless, according to Football Insider, United are still in the market for a new player on the right side of the backline, with Semedo seemingly emerging as a target.

The report claims that contact has already been made with Wolves to determine whether it is possible to agree a fee before the September 1 deadline.

Wolves' issues with FFP have been an open secret in recent weeks, yet the feeling was that they worked their way into a position where they had met the requirements on that front.

Before it became clear that the West Midlands outfit had financial issues, they finalised a big-money contract with Semedo courtesy of Julen Lopetegui wanting to retain his services.

With Lopetegui having left and Matt Doherty also available at right-back, it remains to be seen whether Wolves would take any chance to generate more funds and significantly reduce their wage bill.

The Portugal international cost in the region of £37m in 2020, but there is little prospect of United paying anywhere near that fee now that the former Barcelona man has turned 29 years of age.

Reports suggest that Wolves have been presented with a further opportunity to boost their position with FFP by Manchester City, who seemingly want to sign Matheus Nunes. body check tags ::
