Inter Milan have reportedly offered Manchester United Joao Mario in exchange for Juan Mata.
Mata has been with the Red Devils since 2014 and recently claimed that he is happy to stay in Manchester, although his current terms come to an end at the conclusion of the current season.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Inter have proposed a straight swap for Mario - who has made four starts in Serie A this term - but although United manager Jose Mourinho is not averse to the idea of bringing the Portuguese to Old Trafford, he does not want to give up on keeping Mata at the club.
The report adds that Mourinho's preference would be a player-plus-cash deal, but with Henrikh Mkhitaryan instead being the outgoing player in exchange for Mario and an undetermined sum.
Mkhitaryan has only been afforded two appearances over the past month, both coming from the bench.
