Manchester United manager David Moyes insists Wayne Rooney is not fit to start for England on Wednesday, but wants the striker to play some part against Scotland.

Manchester United manager David Moyes has declared that he wants Wayne Rooney to play some part in England's friendly with Scotland on Wednesday.

Rooney missed United's 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic today with a shoulder problem, amid persistent claims that the striker is desperate to engineer a move away from Old Trafford.

Moyes remains adamant that Rooney is not fit for international duty, but thinks that the chance to join Roy Hodgson's squad will do the unsettled striker no harm.

He told The Mirror: "You don't think I am going to send England a fit player do you? I don't see what's confusing. I have spoken to Roy for over two hours at different times. Roy knows the situation.

"Wayne has trained and some of you might not like to hear this. I want him to join up. He is not ready and you will probably see that in the game. He will probably play a chunk but he has not had enough football. Just 45 minutes against Real Betis in the friendly.

"Apart from that there has been no match action and you probably wouldn't expect somebody in that condition to play a great spell. He is coming back. It will be great for Manchester United so hopefully he can get some playing time. He has a chance to be ready for Wednesday."

The 27-year-old will report for international duty at St George's Park tomorrow, but remains doubtful to play any part at Wembley on Wednesday.
