Newcastle United have reportedly held discussions with Manchester United over a move for midfielder Scott McTominay.
The Scotland international has fallen down the pecking order this season, which has resulted in speculation about his future at Old Trafford.
McTominay is currently competing with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro and Fred for a place in the Man United midfield.
The 26-year-old has started only 11 of his 24 competitive appearances this season, although he did play the duration of Sunday's 3-2 defeat to Arsenal.
Prior to the meeting with Arsenal, Erik ten Hag gave his reasons for giving McTominay his first Premier League start for the club since the 6-3 loss to local rivals Manchester City on October 2.
"I'm convinced this is the right solution", Ten Hag said. "Scott can do the job, he's a great player for our squad. He's a great player for this team and I think he's also making a good development.
"I had something in mind for where Fred could have played, a role like last week against City, but during the game, we can change if necessary."
Despite starting against Arsenal, McTominay's struggles for consistent game time have alerted Newcastle, who are looking to strengthen their midfield during the current transfer window.
According to The Athletic, Newcastle have held talks with United over the possibility of completing a transfer this month.
The Magpies were interested in McTominay last summer, and he remains a target for Eddie Howe's side, who are keen to bolster their ranks as they bid to qualify for the Champions League.
However, a January departure for McTominay is unlikely, with Man United unwilling to sanction a sale this month.
While a transfer may not be currently possible, the report claims that the Magpies could revisit the situation in the summer.
McTominay has registered 18 goals and five assists in 194 appearances for the club, and he has a contract until June 2025, which United have the option of extending by an additional year.
Newcastle are preparing to face Southampton in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-finals on Tuesday, while Man United will meet Nottingham Forest in the last four a day later. body check tags ::
