Chris Smalling could reportedly return and play a part at Manchester United upon the expiry of his season-long loan at Serie A side Roma.
The central defender temporarily moved to the Italian capital following the acquisition of Harry Maguire from Leicester City and the return of Axel Tuanzebe after a loan spell of his own at Aston Villa.
Smalling has sufficiently impressed in Italy to spark talk of his deal being made permanent, but those reports are wide of the mark, according to Sky Sports News.
The Red Devils are struggling in the Premier League and are seven points off fourth place, while Smalling's Roma are fifth in Serie A and have conceded just twice in their last four games.
United are now expected to give the defender the chance to stake a claim at Old Trafford once more when he returns from Italy this summer.
