Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag has said that the club will ultimately make the final decision on Mason Greenwood's future at Old Trafford.

The 21-year-old has not featured for the 20-time English champions since January 2022, as he had been facing serious criminal charges following accusations from a woman.

Greenwood was initially arrested on suspicion of rape and assault, and he was then further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.

The forward was also facing charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, but the charges have now all been dropped, meaning that he is free to resume his football career during the 2023-24 campaign.

Man United are believed to be close to concluding their internal investigation into the events that led to him being arrested, with a decision set to arrive before the start of the new season.

At this stage, it is thought to be unlikely that Greenwood will be sold, with a loan move to a foreign team widely expected to be the decision from the club.

Ten Hag was asked about the forward during his press conference to preview Saturday's pre-season contest with Premier League rivals Arsenal in New Jersey.

The Dutchman has revealed that he has 'shared his opinions' on the best course of action, but it will ultimately be up to the club to make the final call on the sensitive situation.

"It's a club decision and of course, I shared my opinions but it's a club decision and we all have to accept that," the Manchester Evening News quotes Ten Hag as saying.

When asked whether he would want to keep Greenwood, Ten Hag added: "I can't say so much about it but I shared my opinion about it, so let's see what's going to happen."

Greenwood has allegedly recently put his house up for let, fuelling suggestions that he will be spending next season away from Man United.

Roma, Atalanta BC, Juventus and AC Milan are among the clubs believed to be interested in discussing a short-term move during the summer market.

Greenwood has another two years left to run on his deal at Old Trafford, with the option of an additional 12 months, making a contract termination even more unlikely.

The forward has represented Man United on 129 occasions in all competitions, scoring 35 goals and registering 12 assists, and he had been viewed as one of the best young talents in Europe before his arrest. body check tags ::
