Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag has reportedly told Harry Maguire that he wants the centre-back to remain at Old Trafford during this summer's transfer window.
The 30-year-old's future is currently the subject of much speculation, having struggled for action during the 2022-23 campaign, starting just eight Premier League games for the club.
Maguire has also had the captain's armband taken away from him this summer, with Bruno Fernandes announced as the club's new permanent skipper on Thursday.
West Ham United are currently believed to be the favourites to sign the centre-back, with Chelsea not said to be interested despite recent reports linking him with a switch to Stamford Bridge.
However, according to talkSPORT, Ten Hag is keen to keep hold of Maguire this summer, with the Dutchman making it clear to the defender that he is still wanted at Old Trafford.
The report claims that Maguire is also not actively looking to depart, with the England international ready to battle for regular action during the 2023-24 season.
Maguire is likely to find it very difficult to break back into the side next term, though, with Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof all ahead of him in the pecking order.
Luke Shaw was also picked ahead of the former Sheffield United youngster in the middle of the defence last season when both Martinez and Varane were on the sidelines through injury.
Maguire is unlikely to be a starter for England at next summer's European Championship if he again struggles for football next term despite being a favourite of Three Lions head coach Gareth Southgate.
The defender has travelled with the Man United squad to the United States for their pre-season tour, which will begin with a clash against Arsenal on Saturday night.
Martinez and Varane have started the team's two friendlies this summer against Leeds United and Lyon and that is again expected to be the case in the clash with the Gunners.
Maguire made a high-profile move to Old Trafford from Leicester City in August 2019, and he has represented the Red Devils on 175 occasions, scoring seven times and contributing five assists.
Last season, the defender was restricted to just 31 appearances in all competitions, with only 16 of those coming in the Premier League.
Maguire is believed to have gained a wage rise in his contract at Old Trafford this summer, and the deal, which is thought to be worth in the region of £200,000 a week, has another two years left to run. body check tags ::
