Manchester United reportedly missed out on signing Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies for a fee of around £2m.
The 19-year-old, who has largely been deployed at left-back following Hansi Flick's appointment as manager, was outstanding for the Bavarian giants in their 3-0 victory over Chelsea in the Champions League.
According to The Times, United's North American scouts were among the first to identify the Canadian as a top prospect when he made his MLS debut for the Vancouver Whitecaps aged just 15.
The report states that he was valued in the region of $2m-3m by the Whitecaps at the time United initially showed an interest but their desire for him to spend two weeks training in England clashed with a Canadian youth commitment, which led to the breakdown of any potential deal.
The Red Devils did make an offer of $10m (£7.6m) for the teenager in the summer of 2018 but it was rejected, with Bayern then signing him for $15m (£11.6m) last year.
