Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that midfielder Darren Fletcher's protracted move to West Ham United is now off.
Fletcher, 30, had travelled to Upton Park for a medical, but the move has stalled before personal terms were agreed.
"I thought Darren was going to sign a contract. But at the end they look for a loan and that was not the agreement," Van Gaal told BBC Sport.
"I'm only listening to what is now said by West Ham United. He is my third captain so it is not a problem for me. Manchester United just want to help him play more. For him now that is a big pity."
Fletcher's contract at Old Trafford expires in the summer, and Van Gaal has indicated that he will not be offered a new deal.
