Former Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke has hailed the club's reported pursuit of Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria.
Reports last night claimed that the Red Devils were on the verge of signing the Argentina international, who is expected to travel to Manchester for discussions over personal terms and a medical early next week.
Those rumours have been met with scepticism from some quarters, with the belief being that United manager Louis van Gaal would benefit more from spending the reported £50m fee on bolstering his defensive options.
However, Yorke believes that 26-year-old Di Maria will provide the squad with the qualities that they are currently "lacking".
"It's a great move. Angel di Maria is a fantastic player and he can certainly bring something different to the Manchester United squad. What they are lacking at the moment is someone who can take the ball and go past people, as well as exciting the fans - Di Maria comes into that bracket," he told Goals on Sunday.
"People are saying that United need to strengthen at the back, but I'm sure the manager is looking at that. The manager knows exactly where he needs to strengthen."
Di Maria missed Madrid's training session this morning, which has further fuelled speculation that his move to Old Trafford is close to completion.
