Marseille have confirmed that Marcelino's stint as head coach has come to an abrupt end after just seven matches.
During the summer, the Spaniard was the surprise appointment in the dugout after spending his entire managerial career in Spain.
However, despite the business that has been conducted over the summer, Marseille have endured an inconsistent and costly start to 2023-24.
In the third qualifying round of the Champions League, Marseille suffered a surprise defeat to Panathinaikos, losing the first leg and then going down in a penalty shootout.
Since then, Les Olympiens have put together a five-game unbeaten streak in Ligue 1, albeit posting two wins and three draws during that period.
Marseille remain in third position in the standings, just two points adrift of the leaders and sitting ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, yet things turned sour at the weekend.
Having been held to a goalless draw at home to Toulouse, supporters turned on the team and management, and a meeting between the club and a fans group occurred earlier this week.
As per France 24, the supporters group in question called for Marcelino's resignation, indicating that the club would face further backlash if that did not occur.
In a statement, Marseille have now acknowledged the developments and confirmed that the former Athletic Bilbao man was no longer in charge.
"Following the statement released last night regarding the management team, Olympique de Marseille believes that the events of September 18th do not allow Marcelino and his technical staff to carry out their role under suitable conditions for which they were hired," it read.
"As a result of this regrettable situation, Marcelino and his staff will not continue the job they started at Olympique de Marseille.
"Given the circumstances, the entire club is extremely disappointed to face the departure of a coach and technical staff who arrived in Marseille on June 23rd and were fully committed to the club, due to non-sporting reasons."
Pancho Abardonado is in line to be the interim head coach, starting with the Europa League encounter at Ajax on Thursday night. body check tags ::
