Montpellier HSC have stunned Lyon by claiming a 4-2 victory in their Ligue 1 match at the Stade de Gerland this evening.
The visitors took the lead in the eighth minute when Jerome Roussillon sent a dangerous cross into the box and Maxime Gonalons put his attempted clearance into his own net.
Montpellier doubled their advantage as Rodrigue Ninga collected the ball and raided towards the edge of the box before he rifled an effort past the outstretched hand of Anthony Lopes.
However, the home side got back into the game as Alexandre Lacazette powered a header into the net from close range from Mathieu Valbuena's corner.
Lyon almost found an equaliser when Jordan Ferri burst into the box and fired a low effort at goal, which was saved by Laurent Pionnier. From the resulting corner, Claudio Beauvue rose highest in the area, only to head his effort over the bar.
In the second half, Rafael committed a mistake as his backpass was underhit and allowed Roussillon to gather. The midfielder played the ball into the path of Ninga to convert from close range to extend Montpellier's advantage.
Souleymane Camara almost put the game beyond the reach of the hosts when he latched on to a through-ball from Ninga, but Lopes made a fine save to deny his low strike.
However, Camara netted his team's fourth goal to cap an emphatic victory in the 80th minute as he was left with a simple finish by tapping home Ryad Boudebouz's cross following a break by the forward.
Lyon scored a consolation goal through Rachid Ghezzal as the midfielder scored an impressive free kick by curling his effort over the wall into the top corner, but the visitors held out for the three points.
Montpellier move up to 13th in Ligue 1 as a result of their win, while Lyon remain in second place.
