Leon Best is facing a race against time to be fit for the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2012 play-off match against Estonia on Friday.
The Newcastle United striker limped off during his side's 2-1 victory over Everton on Saturday and it has since been revealed that he is suffering from toe and groin injuries.
His wife is also pregnant and she is expected to give birth soon.
"Leon's wife is imminent and they are in discussions," Newcastle manager Alan Pardew told reporters.
"He is desperate to play, don't get me wrong.
"We have spoken to the manager and spoken to the medical team about maybe a bit of compassion in terms of him staying about today because she's that close, so we will see."
Best, 25, made his Ireland debut in 2009.
