Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew is lucky that David Meyler did not retaliate to being headbutted on Saturday, according to Hull City coach Steve Bruce.

Pardew was sent off during United's 4-1 win at the KC Stadium in the Premier League for appearing to nudge his head into the face of the 24-year-old following a touchline row.

Consequently, the 52-year-old was issued with a £100,000 fine by the Magpies for his behaviour, but Bruce claims that his opposite number is fortunate that Meyler opted against taking an eye for an eye.

"He's lucky that he didn't get one back. Then he would have been in trouble, a 25 year old against a 50 year old is a mismatch isn't it," he told reporters.

"I've seen it before in dressing rooms and with your own players but I've never seen it from an opposition manager.

"There is no question that Alan led with his head and obviously lost it. He'll look at himself later on and think what the hell have I done?"

Pardew could also face action from the Football Association after chairman Greg Dyke confirmed that the FA will investigate the matter.
