Newcastle United manager John Carver has insisted that Tim Krul's dedication to the club cannot be questioned, after he was pictured congratulating Sunderland match-winner Jermain Defoe in Sunday's 1-0 defeat to their fierce rivals.
The Dutch goalkeeper waited for the Black Cats striker in the tunnel at half time of the Tyne-Wear derby at the Stadium of Light, minutes after Defoe had beaten him with a long-range volley.
Some Newcastle fans were angered by Krul's gesture, but Carver believes that any criticism of him is undeserved.
"Tim Krul is the most passionate guy about this football club," the Magpies boss told the Shields Gazette.
"He loves this club and he loves the fans, but sometimes when somebody produces a bit of brilliance fellow professionals appreciate it, and that's maybe why that happened."
Krul played down the significance of the incident following the game.
