Tim Krul: 'We needed Wigan Athletic win'

Tim Krul describes Newcastle's 3-0 triumph over Wigan at St James' Park, which ended a four-game losing streak, as "a massive win".

Tim Krul has described Newcastle United's 3-0 victory over Wigan Athletic tonight as a "massive win" for the out-of-sorts Magpies.

Alan Pardew's side headed into the contest on a four-match losing streak, but a Demba Ba brace helped them dispatch the 10-man Latics.

Ba and David Santon left the field with injury, and Krul believes that the victory was imperative considering the downturn in form caused by Newcastle's other fitness concerns.

"It's a massive win for us," he told Sky Sports News. "Tonight, we knew we needed three points. The pressure was on us.

"I don't think we've had many breaks this season. We've lost a lot of players to injuries and luck has not been on our side. But I think we put a lot of effort in and I think we can be proud and take a lot of confidence out of that.

"It's been hard. Injuries and losing games - it's a new experience for us especially as we had a great season last season. We're coping well - we need to stick together and I think tonight we showed what a quality team we are. We needed this."

The result leaves Newcastle in 14th place in the Premier League table, while Wigan sit two places and three points behind them.
