Newcastle United managing director Lee Charnley has hailed Steve McClaren as a "perfect fit" for the club after unveiling the ex-England coach as the new Magpies boss.
The businessman has tasked the former Derby County boss with winning a trophy and finishing in the top eight of the Premier League.
"From my first meeting with Steve I knew he was the perfect fit for Newcastle United," Charnley told the club's website.
"I am delighted that we have secured the services of one of the best coaches in English football.
"He has 20 years' experience, including for the national team and at the highest level of European competition."
News of McClaren's appointment was coupled with confirmation that Mike Ashley has relinquished his position on the club's board of directors.
