Alan Pardew: 'We need to spend to avoid drop'

Newcastle United boss insists that he will need to spend in January to help his side avoid relegation from the Premier League this season.

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew has claimed that he will need to spend in January to ensure his side avoid relegation this season.

The Magpies' poor run of form continued as they crashed out of the FA Cup after a 2-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in the third round this afternoon.

Pardew insisted that the club are not too big to drop to the Championship and said that new players, along with those returning from injury, need to come into the side.

"Not once this season have I had my best side out. We're not too big to go down," said Pardew.

"I think it is important to spend. We lost Cheik [Tiote] and Demba [Ba], one to African Nations and one to a transfer. The most important thing for us is our Premier League status now because we've put ourselves at risk with all the injuries and the run we're on.

"We need to make sure we're a Premier League side next season. We're not hiding from that. We need our best players back."

Newcastle are currently 15th in the Premier League table.
