On this day in 2010, Kevin Nolan scored a hat-trick as Newcastle United thrash Sunderland 5-1.

There aren't many matches that produce as much passion as the Tyne-Wear derby between Newcastle United and Sunderland.

Over the years there have been plenty of unforgettable moments in the famous clash between two fierce rivals, but one match will always stick in the memory for Newcastle supporters.

On this day four years ago, it was the Magpies who earned bragging rights thanks to an emphatic 5-1 victory at St James' Park.

Chris Hughton, the man in the hotseat before Alan Pardew arrived, was just a couple of months away from losing his job, but he ensured that his name would forever be linked with a famous win for the club.

Quite simply, it was a thrashing. Newcastle dominated from the first whistle as Shola Ameobi and Andy Carroll enjoyed fine afternoons terrorising the visiting defence. Hughton's plan was simple. Get the ball wide, put crosses into the box and allow the frontmen to do what they do best.

Kevin Nolan cashed in on the success of the strikers as he opened the scoring with an acrobatic finish from Ameobi's cushioned header, before slotting in his second in the 34th minute after Carroll had missed a chance in a crowded box.

After taking control of the match, Newcastle never looked back, and the victory looked to be an inevitability in first-half stoppage time.

Jonas Gutierrez, one of Newcastle's star performers on the day, was chopped down inside the area by Nedum Onuoha, allowing Ameobi to make it 3-0 from the spot before the break.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce saw it get even worse for his side early in the second half when Titus Bramble received a straight red card for bringing down Carroll as the striker approached the box.

The misery would continue to be piled on the Black Cats as Ameobi fired home his second after Carroll had struck the crossbar with his header.

There would be one more goal for the home fans to enjoy when Nolan completed his hat-trick by heading home from close range.

Darren Bent managed to pull one back for Sunderland in the final minute, but it was not enough to spoil the party for the Newcastle supporters.

Newcastle: Krul, Enrique, Coloccini, Williamson, Simpson, Nolan, Barton, Gutierrez, Tiote, Ameobi (Ranger), Carroll

Sunderland: Mignolet, Bardsley, Onuoha, Bramble, Turner, Cattermole (Mensah), Malbranque, Henderson, Elmohamady (Gyan), Bent, Welbeck (Richardson)
